Dealing with rejection is hard, especially, if it’s something you are passionate about. Being hurt by it is natural and the sooner you come to terms with it the better. I am almost hitting the 10-year mark as a web and graphic designer, and I still have to deal with rejection. If you are thinking of becoming a freelancer, don’t think you can avoid this.

At some point, you will end up thinking you’re not good enough. Don’t let it get to you.

So how do you deal with rejection?

It’s simple. Accept and move on. It may seem obvious, but it’s difficult when you are the victim. I would recommend a change of working environment. Instead of working from home, why don’t you go to a cafe? Personally, I have a self-care budget. With it, I can try new restaurants, buy books to read or travel on weekends. I would do anything for peace of mind.

Another option is to find out what went wrong. Why did the client reject your proposal? Was it your pricing or skills? Getting the client’s feedback will help you understand and improve on your weaknesses.

What did I do?

I remember when I was only competent in web design and most of the clients were looking for someone that was also conversant with graphics. I had to do something about it. I decided to learn graphic design, I may not have realized the benefits then but now I feel empowered. You have to engage in activities that will take your mind off the rejection and also benefit you in the long run.

Whatever you do, DO NOT STOP growing your skills and pitching for new clients. Depending on their criteria, you might get that break.

I have found that freelancers with an official website or social media presence are taken seriously by clients. I recommend working on that too to boost the chances of being hired.
