History often favors those with the power to change the narrative to their favor. As a result, much of it is lost or kept a secret from future generations.

With Kenyan history, much of it is skewed in the colonialists’ favor. We rarely take oral history seriously, and most of the history books stick to the bare, boring facts.

This need to tell the good, the bad, and the only whispered stories from Kenya’s history is what led to the birth of Too Early For Birds (TEFB).

About Too Early For Birds (TEFB)

Too Early For Birds is a series of theatrical storytelling productions that seek to retell Kenya’s history in new, exciting ways to inspire today’s generation. It was started as a collaboration between Owaahh (using stories from his award-winning history blog owaahh.com) and performers Ngartia and Abu Sense.

TEFB- Brazen Edition

Too Early For Birds is an Executive Production of Story Zetu and has been fearless in bringing Kenyan history stories to the stage and shaping the current narrative. This was especially evident at their last show, Brazen, which was a celebration of women who shaped Kenya’s history. It was produced, directed and performed by an all-female cast and was the first show of its kind to do so. The Brazen show brought to light the numerous contributions women have made for Kenya’s liberation, even when they are not seen at the front line.

TEFB- Tom Mboya Edition

As is the case with storytelling, once one is told, another must take its place. When we think of Kenyan history, one name that continually pops up is Tom Mboya. Thomas Joseph Odhiambo Mboya, known to many simply as Tom Mboya, was a fascinating puzzle in life as well as in death. He was the son of a laborer at a colonialist settler farm. Tom Mboya grew up to be a visionary leader, counting Julius Nyerere, Kwame Nkrumah, John F Kennedy, and Martin Luther King, among others as his friends. His courage in the face of opposition and fight for the common mwananchi paved the way for the likes of Wangari Maathai to shine decades later. Fifty years after his untimely death at the hands of an assassin’s bullet, it is finally time for his story to be told.

This is what is set to happen at the 5th edition of Too Early For Birds from 5-6 October 2019 at Visa Oshwal Community Center, Nairobi. Directed by Mugambi Nthiga, there will be five shows revolving around the life and death of Tom Mboya. This will be a story that was set up all the way from Unsung Heroes, which was the first edition of Too Early For Birds.

There will be two shows on Saturday, 5th October, at 2:00 PM and 7:00 PM. On Sunday, 6th October, the shows will be at 11:00 AM, 3:00 PM and 8:00 PM.
